Shutter Hardware

The shutter hardware that you use to mount up your shutters is not standard among all types of installations. However, once you know what to look for, it is not hard to find the right hardware you need for installing the shutters you buy.

In fact, most stores of exterior window shutters, whether physical or online, will tell you what to get based off of what you are purchasing.

The main thing to concern yourself with is the material your house is made out of. If you do not know what your house is made up of, you will need to find out before buying your shutter hardware. This should not be a hard task and most people will be able to tell just by looking at it. You do not need to know the whole makeup of the house, you just need to know whether you have brick, stucco, siding, or wood.

Regardless of what shutter hardware you use, you’ll need to purchase a drill bit that can properly penetrate the side of your home so that you can create mounting holes. Once you do this, you just need to find a drill bit to easily put holes in your new shutters.

The screws or fasteners used to hold your exterior window shutters onto your house usually do not need to be very long. You’ll find that a one inch thick vinyl shutter will only need about a two and a half inch screw or fastener to hold it in place. Generally, fasteners will need to be a bit longer than traditional screws.

Buying Shutter Hardware

If your buying shutters for windows, then it makes sense to just buy the shutter hardware when you buy the shutters. The hardware is not very expensive and it is best to just go ahead and get new screws.

Some DIY types like to use old screws that they have lying around the house. Later they find that these screws don’t work well or that they do not have enough. I find that it saves a lot of frustration simply to buy everything up front and it also saves me from having to stop a job just to go get supplies.

Most companies will sell or even give you the hardware you need to mount the shutters you buy so you won’t even need to worry about it. If for some reason you lose the shutter hardware before you complete the job, just order more or visit your local hardware store.
